-Vikram Pillay to lead Mumbai in their first match on home turf
Mumbai: Dabang Mumbai, the latest entrant in the Hero Hockey India League, has been propagating the idea of collective responsibility in the team and hence would rotate the captains armband throughout the third edition.
The team, owned by DoIT Sports Management, kicks off their campaign tonight against Jaypee Punjab Warriors with midfielder Vikram Pillay leading the outfit on home turf.
The Olympian had been part of the national set up for over a decade, helping India win the Junior World Cup in 2001 and has bagged multiple medals at the Asian Games and other competitions.
The other players who would be donning the captain’s armband through the tournament include former India captain and now national selector Arjun Halappa and 2014 World Cup winners Glenn Turner and Mather Swann of Australia.
Explaining the rationale behind the move, Dabang Mumbai mentor Viren Rasquinha said, “The team has a bunch of experienced campaigners and we wanted to draw from their leadership skills and experience.
“During the two weeks of training we saw how all of them bring different dimensions to the team and by rotating the captains armband we can make the most of their expertise,” he added
