The vastly experience Alegre brothers, Ramon and David, are among the leading Spanish hockey players who have signed up to be a part of the Hockey India League Players’ Auction to be held this month in the run up to the six-team Hockey India League that will be contested from 5 January 2013.
The 31-year-old Ramon Alegre, who led Spain in the London Olympic Games and has 237 caps, has represented his country in three Olympic Games when his team finished fourth in 2004, won silver in 2008 and sixth this year, two FIH World Cup events in 2006 and 2010 and in as many as seven FIH Champions Trophy tournaments since 2004 when the team won gold.
The star defender was nominated as member of the FIH All Star Team in 2011 and is among five players from his country with the experience of 150 or more international matches who have signed up for Hockey India League.
The midfielder David Alegre, four years his junior, has scored 55 goals in 201 matches for his country. Like his elder brother, he has represented Spain in three Olympic Games, two FIH World Cup tournaments and seven FIH Champions Trophy events since 2004. Having earned a nomination as FIH Young Player of the Year in 2006, he was also chosen in the FIH All Star Team in 2010 and 2011.
With 150 goals in 304 matches, the 34-year-old forward, Pol Amat comes with the experiences of playing five Olympic Games since 1996 when the Spaniard won silver medal. A former captain, he has also played in four FIH World Cup tournaments, winning silver in Utrecht in 2002, and nine FIH Champions Trophy events since 1996. The FIH World Player of the Year in 2008, he was in the race for the award four other times.
The 31-year-old midfielder Alex Fabregas has as many as 226 caps including in three Olympic Games, two FIH World Cup events and eight FIH Champions Trophy tournaments while defender Sergi Enrique, 25, has played in 151 matches including in the Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing, where the team won silver and 2012 and two FIH Champions Trophy events.
The 25-year-old striker Roger Borrell (12 goals in 22 matches), 31year-old goalkeeper Xavier Trench (20 caps) and 28-year-old goalkeeper Oriol Fabregas (eight caps) are among the Spaniards who will feature among the galaxy of players from India, Pakistan, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other nations in the HIL Players’ Auction to be held next month.
